# 72 Seasons

> A year-long photographic project following Japan’s 72 micro-seasons (Shichijūni-kō, 七十二候). Photographed by Michael Gebert from September 2026 to August 2027. Not a documentary of Japan — a way of looking at the landscape where he lives.

72 Seasons Revisited takes the Edo-period calendar of 72 kō (about five days each) and answers each one with a single photograph. The sequence was reshaped for Japan in 1685 by court astronomer Shibukawa Shunkai. The official calendar later changed. The habit of noticing did not.

The project started at kō 42, “The grain ripens” (2–7 September 2026), near Starnberg in Bavaria. Kō 43, “White dew rests on grass” (Hakuro), was photographed at dawn in the woods on 7 September 2026.

The year becomes a physical first edition: a freestanding tear-off calendar and photographic object. Crowdfunding is planned for 2027.
